On all levels of China’s government, cooperation will take priority with various industries in China – the work ahead is marked by a three-year plan for more AI, home improvement, smart factories and cars etc. The leadership of the country envisions a future economy that will certainly be cemented on the back of artificial intelligence.
China aims to mass-produce neural-network processing chips, robots to ease daily routines for disabled people, with machine learning employed to help radiologists read x-ray scans. In addition, the country hopes AI will make manufacturing more eco-friendly: the goal laid out in the document is to increase the energy efficiency of the manufacturing sector 10 percent by 2020.
The 12 page document is quite specific and the AI effort is mixed in with China’s wider push towards manufacture improvements and optimization.
Cultivating high quality products will be a future goal, with “application of high-precision, low-cost smart sensors, break through the neural network chip and supporting tools for cloud training and terminal applications, and support the research and development of artificial intelligence development frameworks, algorithm libraries and toolsets, and support the construction of open source platforms.”
Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent, have embraced AI with alacrity: setting up specialist labs at home and overseas and hiring top engineers. Much like their US peers such as Google, they are using machine learning to push into newer fields of autonomous driving, medical diagnosis, facial recognition for payments and AI-enabled hardware that can be operated by voice.
